Description

Crispy and flavorful Avocado Fries baked to golden perfection. These avocado slices are coated in a seasoned crust of crushed tortilla chips and spices, then oven-baked for a healthy and delicious snack or appetizer that’s perfect for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale

Avocado

  • 2 large avocados (peeled, pitted, cut into 8 slices each)

Coating

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour (or a gluten-free 1-to-1 blend)
  • 1 tsp salt (divided)
  • ½ tsp black pepper (divided)
  • 1 cup crushed tortilla chips
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp paprika

Binding

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tbsp milk (or a non-dairy substitute)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 425℉ (220℃) to prepare for baking the avocado fries, ensuring a crispy texture.
  2. Prepare the avocados: Cut the avocados in half, carefully remove the pits, peel off the skin, and slice each half into 8 even slices for uniform cooking.
  3. Mix the coating bases: In a medium shallow bowl, combine flour, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. In a second bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until smooth. In a third bowl, mix crushed tortilla chips with cumin, garlic powder, paprika, remaining ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper.
  4. Coat the avocado slices: Dip each avocado slice first in the flour mixture, then dredge it in the egg wash, letting excess drip off. Finally, coat thoroughly with the seasoned tortilla chip crumbs, pressing gently so they adhere well. Repeat for all slices.
  5. Arrange on baking sheet: Place the coated avocado slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them evenly to allow crisping without steaming.
  6. Apply cooking spray: Lightly spritz the coated slices with non-stick cooking spray to promote even browning and extra crispiness during baking.
  7. Bake the fries: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, flipping the fries halfway through baking to ensure both sides become golden and crispy. Remove when done and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use ripe but firm avocados for best slicing and frying results.
  • Gluten-free flour can be used as a substitute to make this recipe suitable for gluten-sensitive diets.
  • Non-dairy milk options work well for the egg wash to accommodate dairy-free needs.
  • For extra crispiness, make sure to spray the avocado slices evenly before baking.
  • These avocado fries pair well with dipping sauces like ranch, spicy mayo, or salsa.
