Description

A vibrant and refreshing Blood Orange Margarita recipe featuring fresh citrus juices, silver tequila, and orange liqueur. Perfectly balanced with a hint of sweetness and a salted rim, these cocktails are ideal for parties or a festive gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups freshly squeezed blood orange juice
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 3 cups silver tequila
  • 1 ½ cups orange liqueur (such as Cointreau)
  • ¼ cup superfine sugar

For Garnish and Serving

  • lime wedges (for rimming glasses)
  • kosher salt (for rimming glasses)
  • blood orange slices (optional, for garnish)
  • lime slices (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Mix the Cocktail Base: In a large pitcher, combine the freshly squeezed blood orange juice, lime juice, silver tequila, orange liqueur, and superfine sugar. Stir thoroughly until the sugar is completely dissolved. Cover and refrigerate the mixture for at least 2 hours to chill and allow the flavors to meld.
  2. Prepare Glasses and Shaker: Before serving, rub a lime wedge along the rims of 8 low ball glasses and dip each rim into kosher salt to create a salted edge. Fill a cocktail shaker and the prepared glasses with ice to keep the drinks cold during preparation and serving.
  3. Shake and Serve: Pour enough of the margarita mix into the shaker to fill it approximately two-thirds full. Shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds to blend and chill the drink. Strain the margarita into the ice-filled glasses. Repeat this shaking and straining process until all the margarita mix has been served. Garnish each glass with blood orange or lime slices as desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Refrigerating the margarita mix for at least 2 hours improves flavor and chill without dilution.
  • Use superfine sugar for quicker and easier dissolving in the citrus juice mixture.
  • For a sweeter or tarter cocktail, adjust the lime juice and sugar amounts according to taste.
  • If you prefer a salt-sugar rim, mix equal parts kosher salt and superfine sugar before rimming the glasses.
  • For an added twist, substitute silver tequila with reposado tequila for a richer flavor.
