Pizza Base
- 4 whole wheat pita breads
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Pizza Sauce & Cheese
- 1 cup pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Vegetable Toppings
- 1/2 cup sliced bell peppers (red, yellow, or green)
- 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives
- 1/4 cup chopped red onion
Seasonings
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Garnish
- Fresh basil leaves (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to ensure it’s hot enough to crisp the pita and melt the cheese evenly.
- Prepare Pita Bread: Place the whole wheat pita breads on a baking sheet in a single layer. Lightly brush the tops of each pita with olive oil to promote crispiness and enhance flavor.
- Assemble the Pizza: Spread a generous layer of pizza sauce evenly over each pita. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce, followed by evenly distributing the sliced bell peppers, mushrooms, black olives, and chopped red onion over the cheese.
- Season: Sprinkle dried oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper evenly over each pizza to add depth and aroma.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese has melted completely, becoming bubbly and golden, and the edges of the pita are crisp.
- Cool and Garnish: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the pita pizzas cool slightly for a couple of minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired for a fresh herbal note.
- Serve: Slice if preferred and serve warm for the best taste and texture experience.
Notes
- Feel free to use any of your favorite vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, or cherry tomatoes to customize the pizza.
- For an added kick, sprinkle red pepper flakes or add sliced jalapeños before baking.
- Using whole wheat pita gives extra fiber and a heartier base for the pizza.
- Fresh basil is optional but adds a nice fresh flavor contrast to the baked toppings.
